How to Avoid Project Burnout

When the project list starts to stack up and begins to feel overwhelming, it can be frustrating and discouraging. This is a normal feeling that many people have. With a few of these strategies listed below, you can keep from burning out and start to feel more accomplished in the work you’re doing.

To-do list checklist

Start with a Plan

Before diving headfirst into your project, take a moment to plan. Outline what you want to achieve, the materials needed, and the steps to get there. Don’t overly complicate your plan. Keep it simple and focus on what your next step should be and what you need to do.

Complete Smaller Tasks

Looking at a project in its entirety can be intimidating. Break it down into smaller, manageable tasks. Completing these smaller tasks piece by piece not only makes the project more manageable, but also provides little wins along the way. Think of these like checkpoints, giving you a sense of progress and motivation to keep going.

Prioritize

Once you have a list of what you need to do, prioritize. Focus on getting small things accomplished or your most urgent tasks completed as soon as possible. Or maybe you need to finish that big project that you have been procrastinating with because it’s felt daunting. You decide what to prioritize, but you need to prioritize your tasks.

Ask For Help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. As much as we love to Do-It-Yourself, sometimes outsourcing a project to a contractor makes sense to save time and labor on your end. If you have family or friends who can help you complete some projects, then great! Offer to return the favor, pay them, or get them something nice in return.

Celebrate Your Wins

Every completed task, no matter how small, is a step towards your final goal. Appreciate your work and celebrate these wins. These moments of recognition are important for maintaining motivation and avoiding burnout. If you use a journal, write down a win from your day.

Engage With Community

Online communities and social media can be great resources for ideas and inspiration. The support and feedback from fellow DIY enthusiasts can be incredibly encouraging when you’re stuck. Chances are, someone else has had a similar issue that you have and they might have a solution you hadn’t previously thought of.
